Construction Update

Dear Parents and Guardians,

As most of you have no doubt noticed, much of the scaffolding around the annex building has been removed and we are nearing completion of our window/façade renovation. There are still some finishing touches remaining, along with a final clean up. We are told that this will be wrapped up on Saturday. The south playground will be reopened after that.

I want to thank you again for your patience and understanding as we worked through this renovation. I also would like to share information about another upcoming project. We recently learned that plans to replace the roof on the annex building have been finalized. I recognize that the timing for this is less than ideal, however many of you will know that we have ongoing issues with leaks so we do need this repair rather urgently.

Repairs and alterations are a necessary part of the operation of any building. That is especially so in older schools such as ours. This roof replacement is part of a major school roofing initiative by the TDSB that you can read more about here. While many of these roofing jobs can cause strong and unpleasant odours, I do want to highlight that contractors are utilizing a new and different approach at our school that will help to minimize that, along with any subsequent related challenges. A cold application process will be used that will require very little hot asphalt.  A small portion of the perimeter of the roof will need to be sealed with asphalt, but that will happen on a Saturday when students and staff are not in the building. The majority of the work will utilize the cold application process, which will certainly go a long way towards minimizing disruption and impact on students and staff, and we’re appreciative of this approach.

Safety will, of course, continue to be our very top priority. The TDSB’s Facilities and Health and Safety teams are working closely with the school to monitor the new project as it progresses to ensure the well-being of students and staff at all times. During the weekend, when the asphalt is being applied, we will be keeping windows and doors shut, ensuring all air intake openings in the building are closed, and turning the ventilation system on recirculation mode so that no outside air is introduced. If necessary, we will relocate students to different areas of the school. With the process that is being used to minimize odours, we don’t anticipate that will be necessary but please be assured that we will take any appropriate steps to keep students and staff safe and comfortable.

Construction will begin in the near future, weather permitting.  We will receive 7 days’ notice prior to the beginning of the work. Crews will require approximately 16 working days to finish the job, contingent on weather. They will set up on the north east corner of the building.  The north exit will only be used as an emergency exit. Students will otherwise use the south entrance to enter and exit the building.  All playgrounds, except for the hockey court, will be open.

The project will isolate a different section of the roof on each day and proceed until the entire roof is replaced. Before any work commences, a safety meeting will take place involving the contractor and TDSB staff. We will also host a meeting for parents on February 5 at 6:00 pm in the library so that you can hear more about this project from TDSB officials and ask any questions you may have.

I will keep you updated as we progress through this project. However, please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions or concerns.

Matthew
